Chandartal Lake Jeep Safari : Jeep-safaris in the wild are all ordinary now, isn’t it? So, why not add some more of drama to this Adventure-show like never before.
Hopping-onto the Jeep that runs amid those tough mountainous terrains can give you a beginning boost though, for the adventurous thrill coming-up.
Chandratal Lake is already a big enthralling-run. Think of no greenery around yet fascinating you. Isn’t it a bad idea? But Yes, this is the place that hosts ofcourse no greens at such an high altitude but still would captivate your sight and soul.
Camping at such an high altitude would feel like way above the whole damn world and closer to the star-lit Sky. Moon-rise on a full moon night at the spot is the best of experiences. And if lucky enough, you might end up witnessing the shooting stars on a new moon night which feels like showering star-rains too!
Today, we are going to kick start our adventurous journey of Chandratal Lake Jeep Safari. Our destination today is Chattru at a height of 13000ft., around 32 kms from Rohtang Top. This small distance makes people believe that it’s a cakewalk but make no mistakes.
You need to keep up as it includes a steep ascent to Rohtang Pass first, then the slush and traffic towards Rohtang top, then a nightmarish journey on Gramphu Batal stretch. Once we are on the way to Gramphu, we will cross long traffic snarls afterwards, the heaven rises. The steep ascent to Rohtang Pass is a route which is joined by another route – Leh-Manali Highway.
If you would observe it for a moment then you might skip a beat. Gradually, greenery starts to disappear and dryness starts to appear as you progress, you will cross lots of small as well as a big waterfall- in the local language, they are called ‘nahllas’. Another 1 hour from Gramphu to Chatru, because of the pebbled road.
Once reached, enjoy the serenity of this small village. Take leisure walks around the village. You will find a couple of dhabas- enjoy tea and the must-have ‘maggi’. Later, dance away the night while having piping hot dinner and enjoy the camping experience in the middle of nowhere.
Wake up a bit early to soak up the imagery that you would see. Clouds hovering over the top of the mountains. Today, we will embark our journey towards the ‘Moon Lake’, one of the breathtaking views that you would see in your lifetime. Remember this journey is not a smooth one. After an arduous an hour and a half journey, you will reach Batal. Take a pit stop and enjoy the change in the terrain. From Batal to Chandartal Lake, It’s a bumpy ride to say the least with a couple of running streams to cross. The flow of water in the streams will depend on the timing of the journey. The enjoyable journey up to the camping area near Chandratal lake.
A couple of years back, camping was allowed near the lake but now it isn’t the case. The distance between the camping area and the Chandartal Lake is 3km-4km. You can either trek or go there in the same vehicle. And here comes the moment when you witness the Chandartal l- the“Moon Lake” at an altitude of 4,300 meters, this lake is the source of Chandra River and its name “Chandra” is believed to be derived from its moon-like shape. Stay there for a bit and explore the nearby hills, if there is time.
After sometime come back to your camps. Enjoy the starlit night. During the night, the sky lights up with countless starts and is perfect for some excellent night captures, or just sitting ideal looking at the sky and getting wooed by it. For anyonewho is into sky gazing, this is a perfect spot to do so.
Today, we will have a quick start as we have a distance of 123 kms to cover, which approximately is going to take 7-8 hrs to cover. We follow the same route that we have followed to reach Chandratal.
You will reach Manali around evening.
